Trust is confident reliance. We may have confidence in events, people, or circumstances, or at least in our beliefs and predictions about them, but if we do not in some way rely on them, our confidence alone does not amount to trust. Reliance is a source of risk, and risk differentiates trusting in something from merely being confident about it. When one is in full control of an outcome or otherwise immune from disappointment, trust is not necessary. It is, of course, possible to rely on other people or on circumstances simply because one lacks other options.
Who we can trust?
May be our friends, but maybe not…
Our parents… for sure!
But how can we trust computing in a world of lawsuit, DRM and full control?
I don’t think Trusted Computing is really bad for security (see BEAR Enforcer project) but, as a knife can kill if used in a wrong way, it will probably create a state of police.
A place, an enviroment, where every user action is under control and can be used to legitimate the majors to punish users for their action.
Why I should trust a world like this?
Think about it… Major already think that their acquirents will pirate their products… They punish also correct usage… why can’t i backup my cds?
I can’t watch my favourite DVD on an HD tv without Rights Control !?!?!?
Why i should buy i think i can’t control? It’s like buying a new car that only makes me travel where it has been programmed… that’s completely mad!
In a world of rootkits… please DO NOT but major products!!!
